What does elder abuse and neglect look like?

Elder abuse and neglect takes on many forms. Some common forms of elder abuse are obvious, but others are not always easily recognizable. Family members and friends of those inside elderly care facilities need to be vigilant and always aware that the following can happen:

  • Physical abuse. Physical elder abuse could include any physical action that intentionally causes harm to the elderly person, including punching, slapping, pulling, shoving, and the unnecessary use of restraints.
  • Sexual abuse. This includes any sexual contact between a resident and members of the facility staff or volunteers. In some cases, sexual elder abuse can even happen between residents.
  • Neglect. Facility staff members are responsible for meeting a resident’s basic needs, including food, water, shelter, clothing, and necessary medical care. Failing to do so is considered neglect.
  • Psychological and emotional abuse. If a nursing home employee isolates a resident, taunts them, calls them names, or purposefully invokes fear, they are inflicting psychological and emotional elder abuse.
  • Financial abuse. Nursing home employees often have access to a resident’s money and other sensitive information. Misusing this access can lead to financial elder abuse and theft.
  • Wrongful death. If instances of abuse and neglect lead to a resident’s wrongful death, the nursing home facility and staff involved should be held accountable for their actions.
